Ma, wake up! It's past eight! I'm late for school!" Eleven-year-old David jumped from their shared bed and thrust his skinny legs into his overalls. In the kitchen, he threw a couple of pieces of wood into the stove and stirred the almost-dead fire with the poker. The firewood crackled as it caught. "I'll put the oatmeal on to boil."
His words echoed off the kitchen walls. He ran back to their bedroom. "Mother! It's late." He reached out to touch her. No response. A tightness grabbed his stomach.
Sprinting to their neighbor's house, he banged on the back door. "Mrs. Hammond. Help."
She opened the door and wiped her hands on her apron. "What's the trouble, sonny?"
"Can't wake Mother. Come quick."
Mrs. Hammond bustled behind David into the small bedroom. She touched Nora's pale arm. "Oh! Sonny, get Doc Liston. Quick."
