“You’re right,” Joshua confirmed, “…..it’s just that this is serious stuff…..that said…..Marty and I both want someone to know what really was going on when Bendorff was alive…..stuff we didn’t agree with.”
Taking a deep breath, he continued, “Bendorff used drugs….lots of different drugs….but he didn’t confine himself to after work…..he used them while he was conducting surgeries, so by the end of the day’s operations, he was usually very high. He would start out in the morning, usually okay; but, not always. If he had been partying the night before, he would arrive at the clinic still suffering from the effects of the drugs and then immediately start to operate.”
Cutting in, Marty added, “All of the nurses who were assisting in the operating room were on tenterhooks the entire duration of each operation, hoping that he wouldn’t make any serious mistakes. Of course, whether he had arrive sober or still feeling the effects of the night before, he would demand the assisting nurses have lines of cocaine ready for him, should he ask for it.
“Adding to that dangerous situation was his propensity for usually insisting a second surgeon be present and assist,” Marty pointed out.
“I’m sorry,” George interrupted, “isn’t that a good thing and normal procedure; having another doctor on hand to watch and help in case there is a problem?”
“Yes, under normal situations and if the doctors worked as you described; the problem with his method was, in order to speed up the operations, so that they could process more each day, Bendorff would handle one side and the second doctor would work on the other side, simultaneously. Often, this resulted in minuscule variations between one side of the face, or stomach, or whatever was being processed with that patient. Other times, however, the differences were major; resulting in the patient having to undergo corrective surgery months later. In some of those situations, the patient didn’t notice for many months; having to wait until the swelling had subsided or the skin began to settle to where it was supposed to be.”
