Two days after the opening, to rave reviews in a London revival, of Noel Coward’s ‘Private Lives’, Dame Jocelyn Mahone disappears the same day her co-star and husband of thirty-one years, Sir Alistair Vickers, surprises her and the world, by announcing he is retiring.
Following a fortnight of inaction on the part of Scotland Yard, which feels it is a publicity stunt to boost ticket sales, Estelle Vickers, Dame Jocelyn and Sir Alistair’s daughter calls the dear friend, Faison Quay, in Toronto, Canada, and asks for his assistance in locating her Mother.
Rather than merely having his famous Key Security International’s London Agent take on the case, Faison, immediately flies to London on his private plane, along with his husband, Stark Redfearne, son, Faison Quay VII, affectionately known as Veetwo, Règinè Ouellette, Chief Operations Officer of Key Security International and former Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Faison’s Personal Assistant, David Granpré.
Taking up residence in the Owner’s Suite, of the six-star Key Hotel London, the world famous Faison Quay sets out to solve the mystery of Dame Jocelyn’s disappearance, as well as two subsequent murders, before the Final Curtain Call.
Excerpt
“Saturday evening; most likely, the finest Private Lives I have ever seen…..the entire cast was absolutely brilliant.”
“To be honest with you, I have waited my entire career for this opportunity and am so grateful it has turned out the way it has.”
“Meaning…..,” Faison asked.
“I know you are here about Dame Jocelyn’s disappearance; but, honestly, I sincerely hope that you don’t find her until the play’s run is finished. The chemistry of our present cast is so much better than it would have been, had she not disappeared.”
“Why is that; I thought she was considered one of the world’s greatest actors.”
“At one time, she most likely was…..although I have my doubts. By today’s acting styles, she has not kept current…..she was much to melodramatic…..acting today is much more natural, which is very much more challenging…..and she just wasn’t willing to change. In fact, she felt the rest of the cast wasn’t acting…..she accused us of merely walking through it as if we were conducting our first read-through. Good lord, she even said that to Sir Alistair, of all people.”
“Would it be safe to say,” Règinè enquired, “that the entire cast felt the same as you?”
“Actually, Ms. Ouellette, I think you would be hard-pressed to find one person connected with Private Lives, from cast, to crew, who doesn’t feel that way. Quite simply, she was an out-of-date actress, with an extremely over-inflated idea of her present abilities; and, an utter bitch in real life. For Sir Alistair’s sake, I hope she doesn’t return. Maybe then, after the play is over, he’ll be able to gain back his health.”
