Pictorial history of Hacienda del Pozo de Verona, Castlewood Country Club, Old Hearst Ranch, Pleasanton, California

This is the first book ever written about Phoebe Hearst's home in Pleasanton, California. She is the mother of William Randolph Hearst. Since 1890 to the present, her hacienda has lived three separate existences during its over 100 year history. It served as her home until her death in 1919 when it became a posh country club and then a dude ranch in the 1940s and 1950s. Little known myths and facts are revealed in this pictorial history containing 138 rare photos and illustrations. Learn why her hacienda was considered more of a museum than a home and the circumstances of why it burned to the ground in 1969. Today the property is Castlewood Country Club.

Excerpt

Whether it's Phoebe's Hacienda, the dude ranch, or the country club, this land and its historic buildings have been entertaining members, guests, and locals for more than one hundred years. Phoebe would be extremely distraught that her house is gone forever, but she'd be happy knowing that good times continue. The thousands of people who visit her land are still her guests and she's still the proud "Lady in Lavender" extending her hand in welcome.
