When my friend Michael, owner of the Yahoo groups Tielchatter and Tielfriends died, I decided to get off my duff and put Christopher Meets Buddy together.   I re-researched myr esearch, talked to parrot owners and drew on my own experience to write this, if I do say so myself, charming guide to owning a pet parrot. The book, of course, is dedicated to Michael and he even has a part in the story. I can't wait for you to meet the pet store owner.   Let me add that, when speaking of charming, I know you will get much pleasure out of the adorable illustrations. My particular favorite is the cockatiel on a swing, created by my wonderful illustrator arty in memory of Joe Blue, the "bestest" most cutest parakeet who ever lived. I miss you Jo Blue! Sleep fair, sweet baby bird. Excerpt “Why not those birds, Mr. Burke?” Christopher asked, a bit disappointed. Mr. Burke continued as they walked to a different part of the store. “Well, Christopher, they can be noisy. They need a lot of attention and care, and they are very expensive. I think you should start with a pet that’s a bit less work, but still fun. “Now, here are your parakeets, or budgies. They are the smallest of the parrot family. They’re friendly and sweet, and can live, if you take good care of them, 15 years or more.” “I would have never guessed!” Mom gasped.” “Oh, yes. With proper diet, housing, and attention, these little ones can live quite happily for a long time.” “Now, Christopher, here is the little guy I think you should adopt.” Mr. Burke leant over a wall surrounding what looked like a very deep sand box. As he straightened, Christopher saw a small bird on his finger. His head was yellow, and he had a grey body and beautiful, round, orange patches on his cheeks. His crest was straight up and Christopher was surprised to see something that he didn’t expect! “Mom! He has a smile like a dolphin!” “I believe you’re right, Christopher!” Mom agreed. Mr. Burke placed the bird on Christopher’s shoulder and continued. “Now this little one is very lovable and very intelligent. He can live 35 years or more if,” Mr. Burke held up his index finger and waved it from side-to-side, “he is given the proper care.” He doesn’t talk like the larger parrots do, sort of like the parakeet. It’s a whistling talk, but understandable. He loves to be with his buddies, and could make you a very good friend. And,” Mr. Burke continued, smiling at Mom, “he’s very affordable,” Mr. Burke added, placing the cockatiel on Christopher’s shoulder. “Buddy, my buddy. Buddy! I like that! Hi, Buddy!”

Christopher Meets Buddy by Debra Shiveley Welch is a beautifully illustrated story about a young boy (Christopher) and his desire to have a bird for a pet.

The story is delightfully told from the search for the perfect bird to caring for and feeding of it once it becomes a member of the family. The enthusiasm of young Christopher was comical at times throughout the story and moved the story along at a good pace for younger readers. I especially liked the chapters with the gorgeous (watercolor) illustrations of the birds. It is breathtakingly beautiful artwork.

As a hobby farmer, I have ducks, chickens and turkeys - I love all animals whether furry or feathered and thoroughly enjoyed reading this wonderful children's book. I learned quite a bit about pet birds from the contents and would definitely recommend it to those who are considering bringing a pet bird into their home. It should also be recommended reading for children who want to have a pet bird, so that they can understand the time and responsibility that is involved.

The book is amazing. Very, very well put together and the art is exceptional. Whoever did the art work is truly
talented. I am enthralled with the art. And the story concept is on the mark.

Other than one typo which I understand has been corrected, the book is brilliant. I really loved it. I do hope
this book is being marketed in pet stores because it's an excellent bird reference book for kids. And for parents who don't know as much as they need to, about owning a pet bird.

Being a bird owner, I was very interested in knowing that the book addresses bonding with birds. Which it does very beautifully. This is a very lovely children's book. Being a grandmother who buys books for children, I am very alert to what catches a child's attention. And it's entertaining for adults as well. I recommend this book to anybody considering a bird as a pet for a child.

"Christopher Meets Buddy" by Debra Shiveley Welch would make a great bedtime story book as this is one of the best stories for children that I have read in a long time, kids will love it. The art work is wonderful and is an excellent bird reference book for young kids. I would also recommend this book to people who are considering buying a pet. This story is well-written and quite amusing. Definitely worth the price.
