Prologue
Water lapped at the calves of his legs gently. His breathing was ragged, unsteady. The man’s clothes were torn, crusted with dried mud. His cream-colored skin was bloated and wrinkled from his time in the river.
Belua inched forward from behind the tree where she crouched, peering at the unconscious figure. She approached cautiously. Protruding from the young man’s thigh, she could see the handle of a silver knife. The gash made by the knife oozed pus and blood, the dead skin hanging limply around the edges of the wound.
She slowly reached out a hand and gently touched his shoulder, poised to run if he awoke. The young man didn’t stir. Belua looked around uncertainly. They were alone on the banks of the river. If she left the man here, half-drowned with a knife buried in his thigh, he would surely die.
Belua bit her lip. Then she sighed and hefted the young man over her shoulder.
