A short story for young readers who like fairies but who understand that when reality kicks in life can be pretty difficult, no matter how pretty or clever you are. Even Fairies have bad days.
A short story for young readers who like fairies but who understand that when reality kicks in life can be pretty difficult, no matter how pretty or clever you are. Even Fairies have bad days and Fairy Goodenough had experienced quite a few bad days lately. She knew deep down what the problem was. The kind of problems affecting young people in the real world today were affecting her, too. That was why she was different. Getting things fixed was never going to be easy, fairies don't do too well in the real world these days. But she had no choice if she wanted things to change and the best was was to help someone else along the way. First of all, she needed to get out of fairyland, not easy for someone with a broken wing and one leg.
Excerpt
Fairy Goodenough’s head told her what the problem was, even though her heart didn’t want to believe it. She was forced to accept that she wasn’t wanted in the world anymore, the Real World inhabited by humans. This painful fact was the cause of her problems. One by one, her friends had started to look a bit scruffy, then slowly faded and finally disappeared. The truth had been right in front of her, she just hadn’t wanted to face up to it. Who would when your whole world changes around you and there’s nothing you can do, no one to ask, no one to talk to. As the Real World’s belief in fairies and magic disappeared to be replaced by other more complicated things, so did bits of her fairy form. Even worse, she was no longer needed by anyone living in the world and that single painful thought almost broke her delicate heart in two. Instead, the wand she relied on to work her magic bent almost in two. The star was still there, but the stem was definitely broken. Her lovely wand with the twinkly star perched on top leaked fairy dust in all directions. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. And because she wasn’t wanted or needed, she was slowly changing. She had always thought that when the time was right for her to depart Fairyland, she would gently and gracefully fade away. Everything did and she accepted that. She certainly never thought that bits of her would disappear or drop off like this. She wasn’t Fairy Goodenough anymore, she didn’t know who or what she was.
