Donny came to a screeching halt as they ran passed. He gaped as he took in the fiery world that lay hundreds of feet below them in the white quartz city. Only thin, stem towers that jutted skyward remained with their hanging pods all along the outer spiraling length. These single dwelling pods had stained glass windows and crystal bridges that connected to the tower stem. They gleamed in the light of the two, ruddy moons in the distance and the inferno below.
He gawked at the precipice in the middle of the city. Sediment-filled water flooded through dome topped pillars and in between spires from the broken dam behind them. The pinnacle of this scene was a tarnished statue of the prominent, winged and veiled goddess that now appeared to cry as she crumbled with the rest of her once-immaculate city. The fountain surrounding her gave way and toppled over the cliff in the rushing water.
Donny stood back from the window, catching his own awestruck reflection. He felt as if his brain had been placed in a meat-grinder. This didn’t make a shred of sense.
“Dragons,” Julia whispered from somewhere to his left. He didn’t even know she had come back for him. “Such a shame,” she continued with a pained expression. “An entire world destroyed by dragons and contaminated with their scaly disease called shades.”
“Not Earth?” he questioned anxiously. Looking at her with a crinkled brow, he rubbed the nape of his neck.
“No,” she assured him somberly, “not Earth…But someone did this on purpose.” She flicked her eyes downward. “Come on,” she instructed in near silence, “let’s get out of here.”
