But can the love they find with each other survive through time and treachery?  Excerpt When Brys and Haesal reached the shack where she was going to sleep, Rhoda was unbending from the fur pelt that was Haesal’s bed. “There be no bugs or fleas in the straw beneath, Mistress.” Rhoda bowed her head as she folded her arms across her chest and stood aside. Haesal shuddered. “I feared we would have creatures crawling over us through the night. The wretches of this town have never been taught the pleasure of a clean body. The women had creatures in their hair!” Expecting to be dismissed, Brys held his breath. She looked back at him and seemed to hesitate, before asking, “Um…will you stay awhile and talk?” “Of course.” He sounded as eager as a boy on his first date. Could this be a sign her defenses were slipping. She turned abruptly away from his grin. “Will you need me anymore, Mistress?” Rhoda sent them both sly glances. “Shall I come back to help you undress?” “I will manage.” Haesal flapped her hand. She seemed flustered. “Go join the others. Am I so useless I cannot undo my brooches and take off my shoes? Go.” Rhoda’s grin said she was enjoying this. Sending Brys a coy yet mischievous glance, she bowed her way out backwards. At the doorway Brys leaned toward her, whispering, “Godwin wishes to see you about arrangements for the day’s traveling tomorrow. I promised to send you when you were finished here with your mistress.” It was a lie, but she was gone in a wink. Brys sighed. “Alone at last.” Ye gods—that sounded like a corny line from a second rate movie. He stifled an urge to wiggle his eyebrows theatrically. Instead he smiled. “That amuses you?” Haesal’s tone was cool, and he kicked himself mentally. “Being alone with you pleases me more than I can say. It was a silly idea I had. Let me explain. In my day we have entertainment called movies, something like plays the Romans performed in the amphitheaters. Some of the actors ham it up.” She looked even more baffled. “Over act.” He rubbed his nape. “I felt like one of these actors. That remark was corny.” She smiled and he chuckled. “I’m confusing you again. It’s clear you only grasp half of what I’m saying.” With a sigh, she nodded. “I fear I will never understand all you tell me about your time.” “All you need to know is I’m more pleased than I can say you asked me to stay and talk with you. It means that you’re learning to trust me.” “How could I not trust you? Your manner towards me has been so patient.” She averted her eyes. If she only knew how thin his patience was wearing, or how he had to clench his fists in the effort to stop himself grabbing her. Haesal eyed Brys as he closed his hands into fists. Had she upset him? In this small chamber he seemed even larger. “Did Godwin really ask for the help of Rhoda?” “Of course. Would I pass on such a message if it weren’t true?” His smile pleased her—it made him look young and full of mischief. “But I should tell you that he’s just as eager to spend time with the girl he adores as I am.”
