Hardened by grief, she didn’t know unconditional love until he returned…
Does love have an expiration date?
Set in modern America, The Power of Healing pursues the timelessness of friendship and love. Revolving around a mere twenty-four hours in Charlotte Bell’s life, an eighteen-year-old burgeoning pianist and medical practitioner, this novel explores the impact and value of deep friendship. In Charlotte’s rigid, mechanical mind, the world is set in black and white. The deep guilt she has been chained to for over half a decade is her identity—a terrible deed she is unable to escape from. Yet, as she unexpectedly crosses path with a chillingly familiar stranger, her eyes are opened to the subtle beauties and wonders of the world. For the first time, she truly experiences unconditional love and heart-wrenching forgiveness.
Inspired by Oscar Wilde’s profound insights on art and human nature, and structured around Carl Sandburg’s Dreams in the Dusk poem, The Power of Healing asserts that although love may seem dormant at times, it is eternal.

Time seemed to slow to the speed of molasses as she carried out the healing process she had previously only read about in her books; nothing existed but her and the wound. She washed away the blood with water from her water bottle so that the cut was unobscured. She soaked a cotton swab in alcohol and dressed the split skin, making sure the disinfectant covered every square inch. She tied a tourniquet around his forearm. For some reason, Chopin’s Fifteenth Prelude was looping in her brain, a subtle force within her mind driving her actions. She sterilized her steel needle, threading the eye with thin white thread and slowly, methodically, to the rolling tempo of the music, stitched the gash. The music centered her focus, and her hand did not shake once. He did not wince; his face was still and observed her every action. When she was finished, she cut and tied the thread, disinfecting the stitched wound once more.
She met his eyes, her nerves strained, but electrified from the small deed. She had not felt this alive since the Berlin Philharmonic concert. His gaze reflected wonder and gratitude. They were bonded by something she could not discern.
“Thank you,” he began.
She shook her head. “It was no problem. Go home.”
He whispered his last words of the evening in wonder. “You healed me. You hold the power of healing.” He paused, raising his eyes up to the twilight. “The power of healing,” he repeated.
