A fast paced novel set in a time long past. A land where Heroic deeds, War, Adventure and Magical Objects co-exist.

There are those who would oppress and others who would fight against them. Both sides need to possess the objects of mystical power to succeed in their endeavors. Who will win the ultimate price?

At the height of festivities to celebrate the end of harvest, callow youth Amron, drunk and unwell, leaves the merriment behind and wanders alone into the night. Next morning, when he wakes, he discovers his world has changed forever. His village, burned to the ground, its inhabitants massacred. Deeds instigated by those he thought his friends. With his mother murdered, his father tortured and left for dead, only now does Amron begin to learn his true position in life, and what he must do if he wants to claim his true destiny.

Standing in Amron's way are the vast armies of the despot Betlic. This usurper, who overthrew the last King of Xicalima, has in his possession the two most powerful magical objects in the known world, the Talisman of Grebarta and the Mantle of Agetha. Confident in his powers, Betlic believes nothing can prevent him from ruling the world.

As he expands his empire, Beltic discovers the ancient magic, which created his talismans of power, forged two other objects. If brought together, these magical items have the potential to crush his hopes. Hunted by both Betlic and Amron, each with their own agenda, can the heirs to these objects survive long enough to bring together their talents to combine the two? In doing so, will they be in time to thwart both the evil of Betlic and the desires of the inexperienced, but increasingly arrogant and egotistical rebel leader, Amron?

Patricia Perry - Author
The Mastig is a gripping tale of magic, power and the individuals entrusted to safeguard the land. The antagonist, Betlic commands his conscripted army to attack anyone and anything in his path as he marches toward Xicalima, the rebel stronghold in the west. Using the Eye and the Mantle, two talismans of power, Betlic searches for the one thing that can derail him from his goal: the Scraufin, which is a talisman necessary to retrieve the Mastig. Unable to penetrate the magic that protects the bearer and the protector of the Scraufin, Betlic believes that he is now unopposed in his plans. While the bearer and the protector search for the sacred place where the Mastig will be revealed, Betlic continues his march toward Xicalima to face the king and his allies for the final battle.

The sage Haefter reveals the truth to a handful of people whose duties take them into the very heart of enemy territory. The need to succeed rests upon the shoulders of Marazin, Karilyn, Orvyn and others, who must fulfill their destinies or die trying.

Brian R. Hill’s The Mastig is a journey well worth taking. The characters are well rounded; the scenery is breath-taking and the reader is quickly absorbed into the story. I have read the author’s previous two novels (The Shintae and Shadows from a Time Long Past) and found The Mastig to be another great read by Brian R. Hill. I highly recommend this novel.
