"What the hell is wrong?" he demanded aggressively as soon as he got her to a private corner, out at the back gardens. Anna couldn't withhold the whimper that escaped her lips. His face visibly flinched at that. With a muffled oath he couldn’t quite hold back, Rafe turned away before trying again in calmer tones. “I want to help. Tell me.”
Anna jerked her head up again, this time to stare at him almost unseeingly as she studied his golden brown depths for the intensity of his conviction. It was clear and unyielding. His incredible faith that he could indeed help her was unshaken as he met the scrutiny of her emerald gaze head on. The silence that ensued remained unbroken as Rafe and Anna stared at each other for a seemingly endless amount of time. He hovered over her protectively, offering the heat of his body as a comfort for her to hold onto should she need the firm grasp to help her through what she needed to say. His soothing murmur, calmed her. His unhurried tones settled her frayed nerves, and her jumble of words drifted to fall silent.
“Right, now let’s start that again. Slowly. From the beginning,” Rafe urged softly but firmly. Anna shuddered but didn’t draw closer into his warmth or step away from his protection either.
“I…I have…no…had,” Anna shook her head, momentarily confused, before starting again to tell her tale. “I had a boyfriend. Matt Preston…”
