This unusual cookbook is the collaboration of a diagnosed diabetic and a professional chef.
In the first part of the book, Joseph Juliano, MD, shares with the reader his thirty years of hard-earned experience dealing with the day-to-day challenges of diabetes and yet participating in the real world of cocktail parties, dining at restaurants with friends, traveling, and family holidays.
In the second part of the book, Dianne Young presents more than 145 low-fat, heart-healthy recipes like Winter Green Soup; Spicy Chilled Soba Noodles; Lime Chicken Breasts; Fresh Rhubarb and Strawberry Pie; and Cardamon Cream Cake.
Excerpt
The recipes have been evalutated for exchanges and nutritive value by a registered dietitian. The American Diabetes Association Exchange Lists are included in their entirety.

The words balance, moderation, and sensible apply well to Juliano's treatise on living with diabetes. The problem is, most Americans...and even the 15 some million now diagnosed with the disease, simply plug up their ears when the dreaded words are discussed. Yet the good doctor, himself a diabetic, explains well how to cope with all sorts of life occasions, including holidays, restaurants, parties, and travel. His colleague, chef Young, then whips up about 145 recipes, all intended to fit within the diabetic exchange list. The substitution of herbs and spices for unnecessary fats, and the emphasis on grains and vegetables should come as no surprise, even to those not medically restrained.

Offering straight-shooting advice about how to live well within a diabetic management program, this unorthodox book for diabetics and their families, stresses the importance of diet in diabetes management. Dr. Juliano shares his hard-earned experience with the day- to-day challenge of party food and drink, eating in restaurants, travel food, and holiday food.
