Good Reads
Although porn is a subject I do not often talk about, it is a great social evil and one that is certainly worthy of being talked about. And although this book is a short one at less than 100 pages, the author makes some rather deep points about the relationship of pornography and other aspects of social evil such as our unwillingness to accept criticism from others and our increasing isolation into worlds of fantasy instead of into communion and fellowship with others. As an isolated person with a high degree of imaginative capacity, the author's discussion is one that I know a great deal from my own personal experience, and I am sure that a great many men (and more than a few women) will be able to relate to what he discusses so openly and honestly in these pages. That is not to say that everyone will find this book to be pleasant--it is uncomfortably frank and honest--but it is no less worthwhile for all that.
There are a lot of aspects of this book that are very praiseworthy. The author speaks from personal experience to a wide variety of people who share his struggle, whether or not they realize it. The author has clearly read a lot of good books that deal with the question of addiction and spirituality and pornography, and brings a great deal of intellectual knowledge as well as personal experience to his discussion. Best of all, the author argues with sound biblical reasoning and clearly is well versed in the scriptural as well as the societal implications of our social evils. The author's insights about the appeal of fantasy in large part because of the lack of demands it makes on us is certainly one that we would do well to remember. This is a stellar little book, and one which deserves a great deal of attention, not least because it writes about a pervasive social evil that is not taken nearly seriously enough by many, because it demands that we bring every thought captive to God's ways, a charge that is intolerable to many who cannot conceive of any restraint of the full flowering of their lusts.
