Meeting the Kayapo, guardians of the Upper Olgo, and the Piripkura, protectors of Z, they are continually harassed by the Amazon Mafia, a gang of river pirates trying to usurp the expedition.

The mysterious disappearance of Percy Fawcett*
In 1925, twenty-seven years ago to the day, Percy Harrison Fawcett DSO, vanished while exploring the forests of the Mato Grosso in north-eastern Brazil. A fellow officer upon learning of his disappearance a few years later, wrote a mock epitaph:
Percy Fawcett, he has gone
To explore the Amazon.
With a dog, a horse, and two old mules,
Percy, and two other fools,
Crossed the ocean, climbed a hill,
In the untamed jungles of Brazil.
No one saw where Percy went,
Bones were found, all broke and bent
Wild natives said that they were beaten,
Put in a pot and all were eaten.
There in Brazil, the very middle,
The Mato Grosso hides its riddle.
No trace has ever been found of Fawcett or his accomplices.
