Don’t get me wrong. I’m not after sympathy and I’m not making excuses. I made my choices same as everyone else. We all have free will. I guess that’s the point.
I could put a gloss on the way I used to be. I’d like to, but you’d soon see through it. You’re not daft. But I have changed, finally, though getting you to believe me is a tough call.
As to the end – my end – I don’t know, not yet. One thing though: this is my first and final account, my testament. If it gets through, you’ll understand. You’ll be on guard and they won’t suck you in.
As to the beginning, two words: catastrophic panic, a whole gaggle of emotions infinitely worse than being forcibly drowned in a swamp infested with ravenous vermin.
You’d think I’d have remembered what had caused it. You’d think I’d have catalogued it right at the top of the never-to-be-forgotten pile. Fact is I hadn’t a clue. Neither did I know how, why, when, or where it had happened, or how long whatever it was had lasted. About all I could recall was my given name: Ronald. I wasn’t so sure about my surname. I think it was Foster. It sounded vaguely right. I figured I was in my forties, maybe, give or take a decade or so in the plus direction. It didn’t seem to matter.
Bottom line: something devastating had happened, something inordinately brutal and terrifying. Even so, I just had to manage the fallout and wait for by brain to wiggle into first gear, or so I convinced myself. I didn’t question how I could be so calm, so accepting.

5 stars - A thought provoking story, and a joy to read!
It's been a while since I've enjoyed reading an author's words quite as much as I did Robert Turvil's, and I mean that quite literally. Perhaps he doted over every sentence like a master craftsman, or maybe he's just a natural wordsmith, but either way, the style of writing was such that I regularly found myself having to reread certain passages as I went, just because they were too damn good to leave behind. Turvil could probably pen a how-to on the construction of box-girder bridges and somehow make it a fun read, but be assured, his talents aren't limited to wordplay. The Devil's Charity is a first-rate story from beginning to end, peopled with a cast of wonderfully quirky and entirely unpredictable characters, and it's the kind of book that stays with you long after the reading's done.
You'll get no spoilers here, but this book recently underwent a title change, and I encourage you NOT to look into it. My only regret in reading The Devil's Charity is that I bought this book under its original title, which was rather a large spoiler in itself. Still, even though I knew more about the destination than I would have liked, there were so many twists and turns along the way that I never knew quite where we were, and whenever I thought that I knew what might be lurking around the next bend, not only was I wrong on every count, but more often than not, the road simply disappeared entirely.

I was so hooked. I didn't know who to trust! Certainly not Charity though... With each passing chapter, I smiled, shrieked, and hid behind the cover. This book is thoughtful and surprising. I thoroughly recommend. More please, Robert.
Initially I was a little confused, had to go back and reread sections, but the story was so well written, I continued reading and I'm so glad I did! Very quickly I was pulled in by all the twists and turns on every other page. The storyline is very fast paced and it is hard to guess what direction the author is going to go next.
No spoiler-alert here, but I will say, the characters are well described, including their personalities. I enjoyed the play on the word "charity."
The ending is very entertaining and thought provoking! The forehead idea was very clever! I highly recommend 'The Devils Charity'. It is an amazing plot with excellent details. Robert D. Turvil has written another wonderful book. Definitely check this one out. An easy 5 star plus!!!
