Adler had an uneasy feeling he had just discovered a frayed knot in his safety net. The subject of the file he just ordered reactivated had been the officer in charge of the Marine contingent in Zimbabwe when the incident with Matthews and his wife had occurred. Adler secured promotions to buy his silence, but the Marine continued to demand more. Finally, Adler agreed to make him a CIA operative and set him up in a profitable cover business. It also made it easy to arrange the sabotage of the lone helicopter for the mission deep into the Amazon jungle. The search team took two weeks to find the wreckage. By that time, any evidence of tampering was cold. Shortly thereafter, the mechanic who actually rigged the chopper died in a car wreck, without meeting the man who hired him to do the job.
He gulped the brandy. Phillips was right; no one could have survived the crash. But what if Davis left the chopper before it exploded? Brazil had been awfully kind to ex-Nazis wanting to begin new lives. Had it been equally kind to a Marine with a winning smile and plenty of money? More importantly, had Matthews, alone, been able to succeed where CIA, with all its resources, had failed? Had Matthews found a dead man who would talk?
