It seemed like forever, but at last the carriage came to a halt and the blanket was ripped
away. The two men wasting no time, yanked her none too gently out of the carriage and
herded her into a shack with a cage butted up against one wall. Cutting the ropes on her
wrists and removing the rag from her mouth, she was shoved into it with two other young
shabby looking girls.
Instead of giving her friendly looks, they looked her up and down and then began talking
amongst themselves.
“Well, would you looky here at this highfalutin one,” said a hard looking stringy haired
little blonde. “ Where do you figure they found her?”
“She sure doesn’t look like one of us,” said the tall skinny brown-haired woman next to
her.
“Where did you steal that fine clothing?” The blonde bullied. “I think I want that dress
for me self. Take it off right now and hand it here.”
Shaylee wondered if she was having a nightmare.
“I said give it here right now. Are you deaf girly?”
“Oh look,” said the skinny one, “ That sure is a fine ring she’s wearin’ there too. I guess
the men didn’t notice. You can give that here to me.”
