Just in time for Halloween comes the newest release from Carmen Parets Luque, What Are Monsters Afraid Of? This short and funny picture book for children breaks down the monsters of traditional folklore that most readers, including the intended child audience of this book, will know and recognize. While the purpose of the book is to help children see that even the things that scare us might have their own fears, making them hardly much different than we are, it also goes a step further and allows a reader to laugh at the monster they themselves fear. This is accomplished with illustrations and text that depict scenes such as a vampire being terrified of toothpaste and brushing their fangs, to the all-important monster in the closet, who ... I will not spoil it for you here (it's a good one!).

Children have active, curious imaginations, the combination of which can lead to a fear of things that go bump in the night. As a parent who had a daughter so terrified of the dark that she slept with a light on and a sleeping mask (I don't really get it either), I only wish a book like What Are Monsters Afraid Of? had been available to me during those difficult years. Carmen Parets Luque does well in giving the reader a few laughs, which in turn may help us and our children laugh at ourselves. I'd absolutely recommend this little gem of a book to anyone with a child going through a phase that has them afraid of the dark and/or going to bed, and also to the reader who just likes a sweet Halloween story.
