THE OLD MEN IN MCDONALDS
The old men in McDonalds wear funny ties.
One wears a ponytail and Viet Nam colors.
He fancies himself the youngest rebel of the old.
The old men in McDonalds criticize fat women:
How they eat from plastic folding chairs.
They propose laws and rules.
By mouth they run the country -
Empty cups; grown dreams gone cold.
The old men in McDonalds sit and talk of Madonna and John Palmer
As if they were on a first name basis.
They speak of the war and the old days
When they had wives and kids and lives.
They shred paper napkins and Styrofoam cups,
The same cups that clutter streams
And pollute the lands: Empty lands,
Grown dreams of old men gone dead.
