A single tear fell from Brylane’s eyes as she held the phone.
“I know you are hurting love; I can hear it in your voice. I am too. I love you, my darling
Brylane. Please come downstairs stairs and talk to me.”
Brylane let out a gasp. “You are here, Tobias?” she asked with surprise.
“Yes. And I’m not leaving without the explanation you deserve. Don’t you think I owe
you that much, my love?” He sighed as Brylane tittered over to the window and peeked outside.
Sure enough, the silver Jag was parked right in front of her street. Her heart began to beat like African drums.
“Well, all right, Tobias. We will talk, but I’m not promising anything.” Brylane threw on
some clothes as quickly and quietly as she could. She didn’t want to risk the chance of waking her parents, especially her father, who would surely go into a tyrant. She made her way downstairs and into Tobias’s Jag.
“I don’t think we should stay here,” Brylane said to Tobias as she closed his car door. A
white man with a black girl in a Jag wasn’t a good picture in her neighborhood. They both could have been arrested for prostitution or carjacked, which was not on her agenda, Brylane thought as they pulled into the street. A half an hour later, they were seated in an all-night cafe a few miles from the city. They sat quietly as they sipped on hot coffee and ate buttercream Danish.
Tobias took another sip of his hot coffee and placed the cup gently on the table. He
reached for Brylane’s hand, but she pulled it away. “Don’t, Tobias. We are just here to talk,
remember?” she reminded him quietly.
