Create Magic At Work: Practical Tools to Ignite Human Connection by Amy Lynn Durham is an engaging book that speaks about company culture and how important it is to create true company culture by bringing different people together, pinpointing their unique skills, and celebrating those skills so that they contribute to the whole team. Everyone wants to be seen and heard but many times ego is involved when it comes to corporate culture and there is also a lack of trust which can be another obstacle when it comes to building good company culture. This handbook gives practical tools and insights to bring out the qualities of employees and build an excellent company culture that everyone can be proud of. The exercises shared can be used for one-to-one sessions with employees to understand them on a personal level and discover and develop their strengths.
Amy Lynn Durham's approach is simple and fresh. The exercises are helpful when it comes to encouraging employees and elevating their Emotional and Spiritual Intelligence. The topic has been discussed in detail and in a very structured manner, making it easy to comprehend and be incorporated to make a positive impact on company culture. There is a section at the end of Create Magic At Work to write down notes, which is a good way to reflect after reading the book. What lends credibility to the techniques and strategies is the author's personal experiences and stories that will encourage companies to have their own distinct company culture.

This is a nice read and a good handbook for leaders to have on your desk for reference. It is relatable and gives you good ideas and step by step instructions on some connecting activities.

On the pages of Amy Lynn Durham’s Create Magic At Work Practical tools to ignite human connection; is a work of 64 pages encompassing Table of Contents, Preface, seven chapters and a Resources list for those needing handouts and the like.
In the preface author Durham notes; ‘Creating true company culture comes from bringing different people together, pinpointing their unique skills and celebrating those skills in a way that contributes to the whole of the team.’
Found within the chapter titled Some Ground Rules to Ponder, Durham states a rule managers, supervisors, and those in the upper echelon of management; should follow. On the other hand, she says, it is a rule that is often ignored or perhaps forgotten. ‘Never schedule a Team-Building Exercise for meeting centered on increasing employee engagement or morale during people’s regular time off work.’
Taking time away from workers personal lives; Durham declares, is not a good plan to use for building employee loyalty.
Durham offers several exercises leaders and coaches may want to incorporate, or may trigger the imagination of the reader. Journaling Together & with a Twist Writer Durham, a firm believer in the value of journaling, states ‘Among the many Health benefits of journaling is alleviating stress’.
Durham feels Management conveys caring when the leaders invest company time toward employees’ personal growth. Dare to Dream Exercise Durham provides a multipurpose, imaginative personal growth activity to integrate into one of the ongoing scheduled team growth meetings or as needed independently with single employees.
Durham considers adding sessions for delving into goals individuals in the audience would like to bring into their lives as, presented in Intention Setting Exercise, to be a very powerful practice. Intentions; purposes, meanings can be personal growth or business related. One method for the exercise is to provide paper for writing intentions on paper.
More than S’mores Durham mentions that in process of writing this book she contacted a team of eight district managers with whom she had worked in the past; and, asked them what their favorite team-building activity had been. The favorite, a blend of work and play was one held at the beach.
It was a momentous instant for the writer when she understood that most of the people she was working with were very lonely, loneliness brings exhaustion and poorer work production.

Happy to recommend this interesting, well planned self help type work for anyone who finds themselves in the role of leader and maybe needs a little suggestion or two for how to build solidarity among the group he/she supervises.
Happy to recommend for public and high school library, as well as college library, home book shelf and as a gift for someone who may have received a recent promotion to the managerial level or for a long term leader of groups.
