The sound of the slamming door made Peter raise his eyebrows in disapproval. He already had tried to prepare himself for the unavoidable clamor which will would be followed by completely irrational bursts of emotions. Of course, contrary to the postulates of common sense, he would be expected to willingly participate in all of it and act accordingly. His subjective point of view on the matter wasn't relevant because, according to his mother, it was an important event.
His sister was coming home. Again.
“I'm here!”
That high-pitched and obvious statement was from his sister Barbara who just showed up at the kitchen door, bearing a truly unnecessarily wide smile. The foreseeable reaction of his birthgiver was immediate.”
“There she is!” his mother exclaimed, quickly approached the newcomer, and hugged her. “How are you, darling? How was the flight? Oh, I love your tan! Did you have time to have some fun? And who was that gorgeous man on that picture you sent? I want to hear all about it. God, you must be starving! Come. Are you tired?” The confusing flood of questions ended by pulling her daughter’s hand and installing her at the table.
“Thanks, mom. Oh, bought you something,” Barbara said. “It's not the most usual souvenir, but maybe you will like it.”
“I'm sure I will, darling,” her mother replied warmly and then addressed Peter with a demanding voice. “Aren't you going to welcome your sister?”
“Mother, I am a responsible adult, well-acquainted with social protocols. There is no need for such infantilized instructions.” After seeing her unfathomable uncomprehending expression, Peter turned to his sister. “Welcome, Barbara. I hope you had a pleasant trip.”
“And is this all you have to say?”
Even he couldn't miss his mother's criticizing critical tone and was about to reply when Barbara cut in. “Mom, leave him alone. Why are you tormenting him?”
“I'm not. I just want for my only two children to show some joy after not seeing each other for three weeks. Is that too much to ask?” Her whining tone suggested that it isn't, so Peter looked to his sister again. She always handled their mother much better than he did.
