Faryn wishes to be a healer in Alerassa or perhaps to be a traveling one as the famous Taegen is. She has declared her wishes to take further learning sessions from Khenlee to learn the ways of caring for the unwell and injured when school begins again after the Season of Long Days ends. Her best friend Clodagh, a Sedledi girl, announces she is to take the obligatory trip to another village during the break in school. Rather than spend the season away from each other, Clodagh suggests Faryn go with her to guide the wagon dwelling to the village of Fellhaven.
