The call came in. It was the one I had hoped to never receive during my tenure as substitute sheriff, but here we were.
“Go!” Our dispatcher Polly shooed Deputy Nuisance toward the door while shouting, “The principal said the teacher is tied up. She must be running late. Those kids are all alone! Hurry!”
I sprinted across the parking lot with Nuisance on my heels. We were four miles from Greener Valley School which stood as the only K-12 educational choice in our small town.
According to the principal, the elementary pod was on lockdown. An active shooter had barricaded himself in a classroom near the back of the building.
I fiddled with the CB while Nuisance slid behind the wheel. Tapping the old device, until it responded with static, I asked, “Polly, what do we know so far? Is it a hostage situation? Any shots fired?”
“Not yet.” Interference rumbled over the radio before she added, “Only one classroom has been targeted so far. Approach with caution.”
