Excerpt
“Zegg!” Jendar shouted as soldiers in full body armor spilled out of the carriers.
“I see them.” Zegg’s eyes remained glued to the main holo display in front of him. Then, as he touched one of the smaller side displays, the transport began lifting off.
Jendar felt faint vibrations as the landing gear retracted into the belly of the shuttle.
Before the struts were fully retracted, the main thrusters came online. The front of the shuttle began to rise faster than the rest of the ship, angling the transport upward.
The spacecraft shot through the nearly opened ceiling. Jendar turned his head to see what was happening in the compound below just in time to see energy blasts racing toward them.
“Are they shooting at us!?” he shrieked. “They are shooting at us!!”
“They are,” Zegg noted calmly. “I doubt they’re aiming to do any real damage. That’s not their goal.”
“This is crazy!” Jendar shouted. “What’s going on!?”
Part of Jendar’s mind was dimly aware he was acting atrociously by Genovian standards. Such a loss of control and public display of anger was considered uncivilized, even for an offworlder. But right now, he was utterly unconcerned with social conventions. He wanted real answers from Zegg, not glib remarks or half-truths.
Zegg turned to Jendar. “Things are about to change on Genovia, throughout the Republic, and perhaps all of human-settled space,” he said matter-of-factly.
“What does that have to do with why people are shooting at us?”
“You’ve never been shot at before,” Zegg observed casually. “I can see how hard it is for you to focus on anything else.”
“I told you before. I’ve never served in the military!”
“A pity your education system doesn’t require a period of mandatory military training.”
“No, it isn’t. And what’s that got to with anything?”
“Not much, I suppose.” Zegg grinned.

The story is complex and unique in a nice way, and the book is mostly dialogue instead of narration. If you you go into it understanding this, it's a much better read. I definitely recommend this if you just want to float away into a different world.
