The War at Sea grabbed my attention from the first line! I enjoyed the well-rounded characters and the plot with its twists and turns. The build-up to the climax at the end was seamlessly executed, and I could see all the action in my head.
*World-Building*
Author Laurie Bowler immersed me in the story world she had created, where humans and sirens clashed with the occasional involvement of Greek gods. The buildings, clothing, and food came to life full of sensory detail. The supernatural elements were well-crafted and felt authentic.
*Characters*
Both Rylander and Elouise ("Lou") felt fleshed out to me, with backstories, motivations, relationships with other characters, strengths and fears. Rylander did come across as a bit too good to be true (i.e. no flaws) but he's also a demigod, soooo... it wasn't a struggle to overlook this. I enjoyed their banter, and both characters were loveable in their own right.
Stories with developed side characters are always a delight, and The War at Sea is one of them. Both captains, the FMC and the MMC, came with their crew (and families), making for a relatively large cast. However, each side character served a purpose, had their distinct personalities and subplots, and I didn't have difficulty telling them apart. The side-character subplots also fed into the main plot, which is not an easy feat to pull off!
*Romance*
I would've liked a much slower build to the enemies-to-lovers romance (although, admittedly, Rylander didn't have the same magnitude of reason to despise Lou). Even in the first chapter, when Lou fantasized about killing Rylander, she went to great depths to describe how drop-dead gorgeous he was. Yes, no problem that he's gorgeous. But I would think the attention to detail of his muscular body and lovely hair would come later... when she somewhat overcame her supposed hatred.
To me, the relationship between them skipped the friendship phase, where the two characters may share vulnerabilities and stories they wouldn't with most people, and went straight to something physical (around a quarter of the way through the book).
The friendship and trust part of their relationship did occur as the story progressed, which I enjoyed reading. Now that being said, the romance scenes were *very* well done while still keeping things within upper YA, and I reread these pages with pleasure, hahahah...

The climax was suspenseful and suitable for a book that involves Greek gods I'm not usually a fan of the death and resurrection of characters for dramatic purposes, but in this case, I was not too turned off. After all, in this story world, Apollo entered and fought in the climax , and the ending wrapped up everything nicely. The side characters had their happy ending too, which I really appreciated!
Overall, this was a page-turning and character-driven story sprinkled with revelations that kept me on the edge of my seat. Highly recommended for fans of Greek mythology, nautical adventures, and romance with a touch of heat!
Action-packed swashbuckling adventure
This book fed my swashbuckling, pirate-loving soul. The story is driven by two opposing captains with strong motivations: Elouise’s thirst for revenge and Rylander’s quest for peace. Rylander needs Lou’s help to avoid the sirens (because her all-female crew is immune to their songs), and Lou needs to decide whether to help Rylander, or avenge her father’s murder. The two are equal matches for each other, and their uneasy alliance adds an extra layer of tension to an already eventful plot.
Each captain also came with their own crew, which could have been tricky to make memorable, but I found it easy to recall who was who. Krinny, Lou’s assassin, was a personal fave.
The world-building is a lot of fun, immersing readers in a vivid maritime realm filled with pirates, sirens, and untold secrets beneath the waves. The writing is descriptive without being clunky or slow, and I found myself instantly swept into the adventure from the very first page.
