Some say the dangers lie in the cities—they do—street crime, pollution, traffic, all gone mad. But the real atrocities take place in the countryside: pesticides pass muster only because of a cluster of money; newborn peaks of grass-covered garbage reek; voracious strip mines undress the surface; machines constantly burrow beneath for precious fluids; madmen make dumps of toxic streams, and the top-secreting machinations of the government’s armed forces declare war on nature.
True, all this carnage is found in the countryside; and the misfit, the incorrigible, the psychotic are housed there, too. Prisons try to bottle-up the most dangerous, and the asylums institutionalize the uncontrollably insane right next door to the misdiagnosed. Most of these sinister shelters are found far from the city crowds; all just futile efforts to keep the butcher’s knife from the necks of the free. Subsect is like a wonderful bullet to the brain. It moved me to tears and laughter. It also scared me deeply--like Stephen King does sometimes. This book needs to be read with all the lights on and a close friend nearby. Just a fantastic read!
When I wrote ths book in 2000, I was concerned about children having access to the Internet and to chat rooms where "you can be anyone you want." Here we are many years later and the situation with children talking freely to stangers on the Internet
