The nightmare’s twinges no doubt stemmed from my subconscious. Memories etched forever in our minds. Not the fond ones. No. Those which haunt us take over every second of our idle time. Suzette’s murder added another to the file.
The numerals on the stove’s clock emitted a green glow. Two minutes after midnight. Another day became history. Another day added to others I wished I could relive to alter its outcome. I scanned the room. Stainless appliances and window glass reflected the glow. The woodwork absorbed it. Both reminded me of my life. I had absorbed too much ruin.
I filled a glass from the tap. I gulped the water and set the glass in the sink. The glow on the window blocked any view of the world beyond. I saw my reflection on the surface. I visualized the scene days earlier beyond the window. Suzette was out there in the darkness. Black tactical gear concealed her from everything except an IED. Her burns required inpatient care for two days. They released her afterward. Hope lifted our spirits. We looked forward to our future. Death cloaked her now. No chance for release. None existed.
I rarely talk to myself, but I felt the need for a pep talk. “You know what to do, Ridge. This is what you trained for.”
I tiptoed down the hall. The door to Ravenna’s temporary bedroom stood open. I remembered it was closed on my trip to the kitchen.
