The guy in the image provided what was supposed to be an enticing, yet exaggerated, display, which I assumed—combined with his other “talents” listed in the reviews that read like porn—must have earned him his five-star rating. To each his own. The parts of the man I could see on my screen were considered conventionally hot. However, after reading the list of customers’ erotic comments, I swallowed back the bitter tang filling my mouth. I felt dirty just looking at his image—and desperate. But I guess, for all intents and purposes, I was. My deadline from my publisher loomed overhead, and I had no manuscript to submit. My stomach rolled. “It’s been a year, Molly,” Renee had said last week after huffing into the phone. “The editors expect something after that advance. Your reputation will only buy you so much time. Can you at least give me the first fifty pages so I can appease them? Try to barter an extension?” Picturing Renee’s scowl was easy—an otherwise non-existent crinkle above the bridge of her button nose, with her perpetual bold lips in full pout mode. The moments of miscommunication between Molly and Jared are not only understandable but completely believable given their circumstances. Both characters are trying to navigate their own feelings—unsure whether the emotions they’re experiencing are genuine or just part of their "contract." I disagree with the title though, if Jared is anything to go by, men in books are better.
Both Molly's and Jared's characters in this book are realistic and likeable. The story gives a whole new take on fake dating and Molly makes you question to what extremes writers will really go to researching their next book!

The writing is enthralling and keeps you reading from start to finish, I just couldn't put it down and read it in 1 sitting with lots of tea. It's funny with great banter between the 2 main characters, light hearted and has sexual tension in spades.

I do disagree with the title though, if Jared is anything to go by, men in books are better.


Intelligent, Well-Written Romance
“Men in Books Aren’t Better,” is the debut contemporary romance by Amanda Nelson and Lisa-Marie Potter. From the opening page, it is clear these two authors make a great team; the book is intelligent and well-written, with engaging characters. Molly is a successful author who broke her engagement one year earlier. She has a contract to write a romance novel, but no longer wants to write the story she had outlined. Now she feels stuck with a deadline approaching. She needs a new experience to spark her creative juices, so she decides to hire an escort to play out possible scenarios for her new manuscript. Molly stumbles upon the website for “Plus One” companions, which has a strict policy against any contact beyond kissing. She is immediately struck by Jared’s striking appearance and hires him. Things get complicated when Molly’s “research” for her book feels all too real. I loved the banter between Molly & Jared, and the pacing was just right. This book is certain to please readers of contemporary romance!
