The voice on the mysterious message sounded slightly shaky, as though the caller was elderly. It was short. Unfinished.
“Your father was a stand-up guy. I’m counting on you to be the same. I need your help.”
Then silence. The call disconnected.
Mack Peters played it again, and tried to figure out who the caller might be. He detected a hint of a slight accent, maybe midwestern, but he couldn’t be sure.
He stood there barefoot in the sunlit kitchen of his Old Malibu Road house, and stared at his phone as though it might yield more information. A hissing sound from the forgotten espresso machine behind him broke the silence. When he came in from the beach earlier that morning, he had leaned his still wet surfboard against the back deck railing. He saw that it had stopped dripping now. He gazed at the gentle surf in the ocean beyond. Flat. No killer waves.
The voice on the cryptic message sounded vaguely familiar. He wondered if it was a voice from the past. Maybe. But who?
Recognition was slow to come. Then, in a flash, he recognized that voice—Sal Mangino—the one person on Earth he ever expected to hear from. It was like a gut punch. The last time he saw Sal, it was at his father’s house so many years ago. He pictured the man wearing a sharp suit, sharper eyes, and he spoke in tones that made it seem like the walls were always listening.
It was the same voice on the phone, but now it trembled like something had broken.

I loved reading this book and could not wait to get to the next chapter to see the mystery unfold. Had quite a few twists and turns and the ending was not what I expected and came as a big surprise. I enjoyed every chapter of this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery.

The old man in the hospital bed wore what appeared to be an oxygen mask. His skin looked pale, with dark circles beneath his eyes. Then Mack saw it – the glint. The eyes were the familiar eyes in his memory. Cold, mobbed-up, calculating. When he finally spoke, the voice crushed all doubt. This was Sal Mangino.
Mack’s father, Beverly Hills Police Chief Martin Peters, had been killed in a drive by shooting. He and Sal had appeared to be close. When Sal was at the Peter’s house, he was charming in his own way and showed loyalty to Mack’s father. Could this man have been involved in the shooting? Now he needs Mack’s help, or so he says.
I love good suspense, mystery, ‘what is really going on’ book and this one fits the bill. The mystery of what Sal Mangino really wants from Mack keeps you turning the pages. It appears he needs Mack’s help in recovering the stolen items from his last 3 jobs as well as something even more important than money & jewels. Everyone, even the government, seems to be looking for Mack, whose father gave him the clues to the hiding place, and this has put Mack and his friends on a 48-hr. run to stay alive and discover the truth.
This mystery had me on the edge of my seat from page 1. I feel sure it will have you there too.
