This cycle of poems explores a mother's experience with raising a beloved son with Asperger's Syndrome, the high functioning form of autism sometimes known as "idiot savant" disorder and featured in the film "Rain Man." i> Dark Card /i>won the 2007 Robert Phillips Poetry Chapbook Prize and was published by Texas Review Press in June 2008. Poetry about people and place in western Pennsylvania
This cycle of poems is about the author's childhood in the Allegheny Mountains of western Pennsylvania in a small town north of Pittsburgh. Altoona was once a major center for railroads and coal mines, and the economic and environmental damage caused by these industries and their decline is an important theme in the book. i>Mom's Canoe /i>also celebrates the natural beauty of the area and the courage and spirit of the people wo live there.
