In Northern Minnesota’s Bigfork River Valley, back in the days of the big timber camps, a man by the name of Wil Morgan and his wife raise a pair of orphaned kids, bringing them to adulthood. Wil tells of his life on the Bigfork and his time working in the timber camps. He was a hunter and a trapper, and as a long-time resident had many tales to tell. The children’s family was lost when a Canadian jack named Scooter Sherman, a man with no reverence for life, burned down their cabin in the middle of the night. He kills the parents and a small baby just to get revenge for his losses at a poker game. The book tells of the successes and failures of good, hardworking people and the trail to bring a bad man to justice.
P>The weathered looking man dipped his canoe paddle quietly into the dark water of the Bigfork River and pulled. As he lifted it to repeat the motion, water fell from the paddle into the river making a soft tinkling sound. Wil Morgan wore a wide brimmed hat and had a neatly trimmed beard that was a broad mixture of salt and pepper. His red and black plaid shirt gave him the look of a lumberjack which he indeed was. /P>

In the early days of Minnesota, the first settlers were the river men who tamed the far north. There were trappers, farmers and some who made their living in the dark of night. There were men who bought and sold as slaves, women, stolen from all over the globe. The descendents of these stolen women are still living in the far north of the state.
BR>A large herd of caribou meandered slowly across the face of Gitche Manitou’s creation, searching for lichens and small willow brush to sustain themselves. Once in a while, the lead bull would abruptly stop and raise his head looking for anything that might be a threat to himself or his herd. His large black nose drew in the surrounding air searching for the scent of wolves. His status in this group meant that he was expected to keep an ever watchful eye out for danger. Two men meet while on a hunting trip near Roseau Minnesota during World War II. The main character is Wil Morgan, an old river rat from the Bigfork River Valley and the other is Matt, a surgeon from Minneapolis. Through the course of the book, Wil tries to teach the young doctor all the things he'll need to know to survive living on the river. Lots of tears and laughter make this an excellent read.
P>Wil was busy one day in the barn when Joe and Frank Barrett drove into the yard with a team of horses. Joe asked if Wil had ever used dynamite. Wil said that he had, but it was dangerous work and best left to a powder man. /P>
