During the reign of the Beatles and on the back of the Mersey beat revolution, other rock and pop bands emerged. Ray Evans joins one of these emerging bands and the story plots the rise and fall of the band Satan’s Whiskers.
A dark shadow hangs over the band after a child is discovered murdered and hidden in a cardboard box. A vigilante tracks down the culprits and extracts retribution. This is the start of a vigilante killing spree. From the very outset the police suspect that one if not all of the band members are involved, as the killings appear to closely follow the band’s movements. I | |  | | Weekend in Amsterdam
This story is based on factual events. In the late 1960s I was sent to Holland by my employer. On the weekends I journeyed to Amsterdam where I met a Soviet agent, who told me that he was head of security at a Soviet radio station. I envisioned a uniformed security guard at a radio station playing folk songs, perhaps spreading a little Soviet propaganda, but nothing could have been further from the truth. It transpired that the radio station transmitted, and received, coded signals, while intercepting and breaking the coded signals of foreign governments.
I befriended the Russian, and we toured the bars of Amsterdam together. He asked if I would work for the Soviet Union in an intelligence gathering capacity. I asked what I might contribute that he couldn’t read in a British newspaper or a library book. He answered that I would be surprised and hinted that I could be placed into positions of mutual benefit. I declined, but often wondered what might have been the consequences if the Russian had refused to take no for an answer.
BY THE END OF THE 1960’S COLOUR TELEVISION AND VIDEO RECORDERS WERE THE NEW TECHNOLOGIES. TRANSISTORS HAD BEGUN TO MINIATURISE ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT AND THE RACE WAS ON TO MARKET THE FIRST HOME VIDEO RECORDER.
RAY EVANS IS A YOUNG MAN WORKING FOR A MULTINATIONAL ELECTRONICS COMPANY DEVELOPING THESE NEW TECHNOLOGIES. WHEN HE IS SENT TO AMSTERDAM, ON BUSINESS, HE ENCOUNTERS A SOVIET (GRU) AGENT WHO ATTEMPTS TO RECRUIT HIM INTO A WEB OF INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE.
