It would be difficult to tell when it started. If one is to believe what is written in Captain Reston’s diary, it began in the year 1806. But if you could have talked with Adam Blayn, he would have told you that it commenced when a man killed himself by rushing headlong into Adam’s speeding Buick in Tucson, Arizona, one hot July afternoon.
Whatever the truth was, Adam’s psyche would never again be free of unpredictable hellish intrusions—hallucinations that included a gravestone with his wife’s name chiseled into it.
Was it coincidence that the dead man’s sister-in-law was never far away when deadly accidents happened? Or was Detective Santos right in suspecting her of being implicated in the demise of four people, who were supposedly dear to her?

It was one of those weather-perfect mornings in the Pit River country of Northern California. Mark Fielding lived for days like this.
A short time ago, he had reached the river. After scaling the large outcrop-
ping of rock that protruded into the river and was some ten feet above it, he was now sitting quietly, eyes closed, tuned into his world.
A faint, out-of-place sound eminating from across the river cut into his reverie. Then it came again, this time with more intensity. Standing up, he cupped his hands in binocular fashion to keep out the glare of the sun on the water. He slowly panned upriver and soon spotted a figure coming toward him, flailing a stick at who knew what.
Mark's seemingly insatiable curiosity was about to lead him in pursuit of a young girl, whose terrifying memory of her father she could not forget. Finding the girl would eventually be a test of his endurance--if he was to survive.
Along the way, he must confront, and perhaps change, his way of life--if his girlfriend, Sandy, has anything to say about it.
