CHAPTER ONE

CHAPTER ONE It was a silent kill, no blood, and when the corpse's bowels spilled, the killer sat it down on the toilet by the chord around its throat like a marionette, then closed the stall door behind him. Colonel Rafael Gomez looked at the clock on the wall behind the counter, then at the direction his adjutant had gone. A plane taxied by the airport cafe's window. The waitress motioned toward his cup. He shook his head grimly and covered the cup's mouth. "May I ask, General," the stocky Gomez had said after he'd received his new orders, "why I am rep
The Demon of West Texas

Chapter One

Chapter One br /> Bud let the brake go, and the windmill set right to spinning, a stiff breeze coming from the south. Jorge stood nearby, dark face squinting up at the contraption the boss had been working on ever since he got back from California. br /> Bud, Jake and Jorge all stepped away as the windmill picked up speed. Water gushed out of the pump, cold and clear, into the watering trough. Jorge stopped, then stepped back toward the base of the tower, looking at the meter. br /> Lean young men, all three, jeans and work shirts, leather gloves either pulled
The Gambler Faster

Jedidiah Faster is not your ordinary Western hero.

Chapter One

“Fold,” the Judge said. Faster forced a poker face smile to his lips, but his gray-green eyes burned in their sockets as he moved the winnings over to his end of the table. “Call it a night, your honor?” “One more hand,” the Judge answered. The stately countenance of the Judge belied his advanced years. His silver hair was managed and oiled to a sheen, his matching gray mustache and smooth bare face looked like he’d just stepped out of the barber shop. He seemed unaffected by the late hour. Floorboards creaked. The bartender stepped up to the table.
The Shaman's Spring

It kills, of course, but practically everything in the desert does that. No, there’s a unique goal to the ancient course, a special kind of immortality, swathed in solitude. It takes a singular kind of prey to fall into this trap. A desert rat.

CHAPTER ONE The glint of something through the needles and limbs of the three Pinyon Pines below flashed again. “Can you see it?” Sam lowered the small binoculars from his eyes, but continued to squint down through the labyrinth of boulders. “Doug, if I could see it, I’d say so.” Doug lowered his own binoculars. Just like that, it was gone. “Right in there, below the trees.” “Well, what’s it look like?” “Like a sheet of stainless steel.” “I thought you said it looked like water.” Do
THE TINKER’S TRAP

This isn’t Mayberry, its rough and raw Moose County, Nevada.

CHAPTER ONE False dawn lit the mountains to the east. The black-and-white Grand Cherokee eased off the deserted highway and started down the once-paved road to Copperhead. ‘Moose County Sheriff’s Department’ circled the star on the front doors. There was a large sign on the road that was supposed to read “Early Bird Farm”, with a caricature of a hen eyeing a worm sticking out of the ground, but it was so riddled with shotgun blasts, all that was left was the word ‘Bird’. Power lines ran along the road. Drooping from pole to pole, they hadn’t held electricity in
The Unusual Life and Times of Jimmie Joe No-Name

Trauma comes in Many Ways, Caused by the Most Uncommon things.

The first things he became aware of was that he was thirsty, he was hungry, and he was butt naked. In that order. He was cold, too. The very cold naked man looked up to realize he stood on the lip of a valley that stretched for miles, just a hint of a road down in the belly of it, desiccated country accentuated by Joshua Trees. The soft blue sky stretched away forever. He could smell the creosote, a curious incense of clean desert and urine. Black Bush, Rabbit Bush, Chia, all brown and dead to the eye in the winter’s grasp. No buildings, no water, a blank palette of wilderness as
