“The Old Man”
It is not advisable to feel kinship with an obvious lunatic, nor did Robert do so. And yet all the next day he couldn’t get Herr Eberhard out of his head. He was distraught and forgetful; he couldn’t concentrate on his chores, and, to catch up on his homework, he had to stay in the library two hours longer than usual. Now it may well be that the conversation was longer than he recalled, but what remained in memory illustrated at least the nature of Herr Eberhard’s preoccupations and added a stroke or two to Robert’s sketchy picture of him—and the picture wasn’t pretty.
