I struggle to pull the door closed as I leave the house in time to catch the seven-thirty school bus. A blast of cold air applies pressure against the door causing me to strain with all my strength to pull it shut. It's a pinching cold winter morning in our coal-mining town of West Virginia. The air is filled with burning wood and coal smoke. It has an odor I've learned to hate because it causes me to struggle to breathe.
