I enlisted in the Navy in 1958. I use myself as an example in describing my
pre-navy life and my first duty assignment in Newport, RI. I wanted to represent the tens of thousands of sailors who made the same walk.
This is the saga of one sailor who came to Newport out of the tens of thousands of sailors who came before me, after me, and continue to arrive to date. Whatever path they chose in life's journey sailors will never forget the day they came to Newport. It was a steaming Navy town where the Tavens tripled the number of churches. Thames Street and the "Blue Moon" became topics of daily conversations. That is, not to rule out "Blood Alley!" Shore Patrol, Newport cops and dogs tried to keep control. But, them sailors were a rowd bunch.

Newport in the 1950's when sailors and fishermen ruled over Thames Street. The rich, from their mansions on Bellevue Avenue controlled it all. JD O'Donnell, the unofficial mayor of Newport, held a monopoly on the lobster business as well as control over the city government. The Chief of Police reported directly to JD. No one stood in O'Donnell's way. Those that dared, suffered fatal consequences.

In the 1950's and early 60's multitudes of sailors roamed the streets of Newport, RI. In the 1970's the Navy had relocated most of its ships to ports in the south. The Naval presence consisted of the Naval War College and a few scattered training commands. With the loss of the fleet the town fathers turned to tourism to restore the cities economy. JD O'Donnell reins as the unoffical mayor of Newport holding power and influence over city officials.The Chief of Police serves as his enforcer.
