Any bunch of mountains has its legends and the Wichita’s in southwest Oklahoma is no exception. The Wichita’s stretch across half of Kiowa County starting at the North Fork of the Red River down into Comanche County close to Fort Sill and Lawton Oklahoma. These mountains are thought to be the oldest in the United States. It is only natural that many legends and stories of gold hidden in their inaccessible boulders abound for even strangers from foreign lands seeking their fortunes, along with the gold miners, Indians, cowboys and outlaws.

Don Ulma had heard of the Bell ranch but who hadn’t in this part of the country. By a fluke in being in the wrong place at the wrong time Don had the chance of working on the ranch. While taking the money which Harmon Bell had recovered from bank robbers Don was involved in a shoot out at the bank when the bank was being robbed again. Then Don and Cup Madden along with Noak Oaks made a trip to Montana to purchase Appaloosa horses for the ranch. On the way back the horse herd was stolen and Cup died while Don was saved from being killed because he carried books to read. In recovering the horse herd Don rescued two women who was being evicted from their property by gun man shooting at the house. A speculation man was trying to take over the range because of the water rights he wanted to sell to a railroad.
Not long after that Don married one of the women and bought the herd of the Flying U from a dieing rancher. Don moved the cattle back to his land holdings in No Mans Land or some folks called it the Cimarron Strip which was a haven for outlaws and rustlers. What it took to hold the Flying U was guns and guts along with savvy on how to make things work for the ranch

On the western frontier, most of the doctors had very little medical training. Some of the men that did the doctoring were Dentist, Barbers and Veterinarians. They did there best with what knowledge that they possessed. In today’s world, the Emergency Medical Technician most commonly called EMT’s, has more training then the doctors of the 1800’s or even over into the early 1900’s. The doctors of the late 1800’s knew how to do very simple surgery, dig for bullets, sew up cuts and to maybe set broken bones, and treat very little of the diseases that confronted them. There medical knowledge of medicine to give to people was very limited, to say the least, but the Doctor’s were valued in any community.
The stories told in this novel were told to me by Doctor Mullins. In 1961, Doc was 90 years old and had quit practicing medicine at the time. In his early years, he had treated people in the late 1800’s and for his pay had received barter goods more times than money. The doctors of old at times didn’t make enough money to buy medicine to replace what they used and had to resort to trading what they received as payment for money or other means.
This is the story of Tanner the members of the community, and how they made the town a better place to live by making Tanner a thriving town. Even though Tanner became one of the ghost towns of the old west because the railroad missed the town by thirty miles and the people moved to the railroad.
Doc Lightfoot
Ben Colder was known to do a little of everything to make money. He took on a job of finding a lost husband for a lady. When the price for finding a lost husband was upped to $1000 dollars, all Ben could think about was a cattle ranch in the Chickasaw Nation. The lost husband turned out to be the only Doctor in the Ouachita Mountain Range. The Butler Gang had taken the Doc known as Lightfoot under their wing and didn’t want him to be taken from the mountains. After being shot in the back he recovered at the place where the lady that had taken him in when he was only 10 years old. He asked her daughter to marry him as soon as he got the Doctor back to his wife and he could collect his bounty money.
Ben was held prisoner by the Butler gang, with the aid of the town law at Reams town and Doc Lightfoot, they were able to kill the Butler gang and rescue the Doctor. Ben collected the reward and moved his wife and her mother south from the mountains and out into the Chickasaw Nation to raise cattle.

In the early years of the War Between the States, Civil War or War of Northern Aggression, as some southerners called it, a man paid his debts however he could. In the southern states, at times, slaves were used as collateral and won or lost on the turn of a card in games of chance. Whole plantations was lost because of this war and the slaves set free with no where to go or any means of support for food. Many of the slaves starved to death or were hung for thievery because of stealing food or clothing.
During the Civil War there were people who did not believe in slavery and helped the slaves to escape to the north or to the far west. This is about one such incident which happened and how the slaves were moved to Colorado. There are many more stories of such things happening and the destination was one of the western Territory’s. Quiet a few towns sprang up in the west which was for the black people to live and it was for blacks only.
In the western part of the United States a black man was measured by what he could do and his honesty. There were many cowboys, wagon drivers, horse wranglers, cooks, and other jobs the black people excelled in every way. They were accepted by the Indians and some whites as equal men. In the west the black man was accepted into the Calvary and was soon feared as the fiercest fighting man by all hostile Indian.

Harm had been working for the railroad from the time he was fifteen until he was laid off at the ripe age of twenty. Harm and a friend, he worked with on the railroad, decide to move west in Indian Territory of Oklahoma and take up homesteading. A simple move for him and his friends wagon ended up with a wagon train of folks moving with them. A man he helped in a time the man was hurt. Turned out to be an Ex Texas Ranger. Also the Ex Ranger had two friends that lived near him decided to go with Harm to the west. With a lot of problems along the way. The rescue of two women that had been taken by outlaws and the old Texas Rangers had rescued.
Harm made friends with a Comanche Indian, on the trail west, who has taken his family from the reservation at Fort Sill. Harm latter married one of the women from the stage holdup. Along the way Harm made friends with other Rangers and when Harms wife was killed, during a bank robbery, he took the trail to get vengeance. Some of his Ranger friends caught up with Harm and TA Noaks, swore the two men in as Rangers to up hold the law. Latter Harmon Bell and Tanner Oaks (Ta Noaks a full blood Comanche Indian) were sworn in to carry both the Texas Ranger Badge and The Deputy U.S. Marshals badge.
Harm and Ta Noaks followed the Wilson gang to the last man. He was asked to take the honor of being a member of the White Bear Clan by two of the oldest members of the clan, Lem Dew and John O’Leary.
Harm married an Irish girl and became one of the largest land holders in Texas at the time. He raised horses and let the Comanche Indians, which were called hold outs because the slipped off the reservations, live in peace on his land. Indians were starving, on the reservation, from either bad food or no food.
In the American west of the late 1800’s and early 1900,s many law men wore more than one badge to up hold justice. This is the story of such men that had a badge given to him by the Texas Rangers and one by the U.S. Marshals, which had his name engraved on the back of the badge.
In 1974 I the honor to be able to see a case containing the two of the badges mentioned in this novel. The original owner was long since dead and his granddaughter had them in her possession. She told me the stories of her grandfather and a friend of his, who also give a set of badges, which wore the badg | |  | | The Gethering
The U.S. Marshals and the Texas Rangers band to gethe4r to take Captain Cole's Hideout.
The building was built like a fortress and the Military is called in with a cannon to blow the building apart.
The building set on a point of land that had Blacksmith canyon and Horse thief Canyon on the side of it. There was only one entrance and that was on the back side of the building. The results was fifty or more outlaws were captured and brought to Justus. | |  | | Trail Drive, Cattle or Kids
By the end of the Civil War jobs were a thing of luxury if you had one which paid money. The men returning from the war found their lives disrupted, families starving or dead. Then someone decided to drive cattle north to Kansas City or Sedalia Missouri. There was where the markets were for a country which had a need for beef. This is the story of one man who took an old Osage Indian for his word of “All ways help others and they will help you.” He recovered the money, which him and his men had taken from the Union Army during the war, and was buried in Arkansas. He went west to Texas and met a man by the name of Tutewiller who had been on a cattle drive the previous year.
Teaming up they put together a herd of longhorns and headed north to market. Over the next years they had formed the WH ranch and in doing so had ended up with nineteen orphans from around the area. At times he did not know if he was in the cattle business or raising children. However along the way everyone on the ranch became a big family and the ranch grew through hardships and good times along the way.

I have included several accounts that were told to me by trusted people which knew of the happenings of the stories of the gold in Oklahoma Territory. Either by what they had heard or by actual accounts from living at the time of happenings.
There is a lot of information of where to find gold in todays time that is for the taking. The burried Treasures are still there and one must research and with luck may be the one to locate the treasure.
When most people hear the word Oklahoma, they think about the Oklahoma Land Run, cowboys and Indians, and the oil boom, however, they do not realize that there are many treasures that were lost throughout history in the state of Oklahoma.
Things told and remembered of outlaw gold but none has ever been reported are supposedly recovered. Even though there has been hundreds of moneys recovered that could have been outlaw gold that has been reported. The following items have never been recovered or reported.

Action packed old time western about a man trying to keep what is his. He takes care of the problems and ends up raising horses with his wife and family of children. Two of the children are rescued Indians.
Old time western and action packed about life in the late 1800. A man trying to do right in life that just wanted to be alone. Unable to get along with other people he became a wolf hunter by a twist of faith. He found his true love thou from a tragedy in her life.
Deputy Sheriff, Cowboy, Wolfer, and then back to a Deputy U.S. Marshal he made a full circle. Lem Dew had been saving his money for years to start a horse ranch in the Yellow Stone Country to have it stolen from him. On the same day he found a massacred party of men with the only survivor a woman that had been with the party. |
