A rags to riches story set in the US and England in the 70s. Jack, from 9 to 13, goes from being a runaway torag to a polite boy. He is extremely deprived, never changing his clothes, his parents dislike him and authorities imprison him. the novel has nasty authority figures - his family, neighbours, truant officers, teachers, policemen - all of whom he struggles with for freedom. his spirit endures, and after escapes from institutions, he goes overseas, befriending 2 immigrants who allow him to stay with them and he experiences love at last. there are still obstacles to overcome - but his life is heaven.
