Kerry finds herself on a case that involves Cryonics and ice cream, and leaves her chilled to the bone.
Scene 1
Human flesh freezes at somewhere near seventy below zero. At least that was what Kerry remembered from some obscure web site. The five below temperature in Chicago that January morning wasn’t even close, but she decided not to take any chances when she dumped the trash.
Barely two inches of pink flesh showed between the bottom of her wool hat and top of a wool scarf that she had wrapped around her face a time or two. Kerry braced herself to make the twenty foot run from the back door of her apartment building to the dumpster.

The continual growth of online crime has police nationwide preparing for a twenty-first century show down. One of those law enforcement people is a fictional Chicago police detective.
Chapter 1
Scene 1
“Mike, don’t move!” Kerry shouted and aimed her weapon a few inches above his shoulder. The small piece of metal she launched pierced the gloom and found a figure almost hidden in the unlit alley. He collapsed to the pavement.
When a noise came from behind, Kerry spun with her weapon ready. She fired at a shape rising alongside the dumpster and watched her bullet shatter the gunman’s wrist. His weapon flew from his hand and he staggered out of the alley clutching his arm.

Chicago Police Detective Kerry Grant returns to the South Side of Chicago for her twenty-fifth high school reunion and finds a classmate murdered.
Chapter 1

Kerry entered the auditorium through a rear door and waited for her eyes to adjust. The darkness formed a barrier between her and the stage where she and Shayna had planned to meet. “Shayna,” she shouted through the gloom. “Turn on the lights. I can’t see.”
She pressed her fingers to the wall and followed it toward the stage. With each cautious step, the exit signs behind her dimmed, until their glow gave no more light than a distant star in a pitch-black sky. “Shayna, are you here? Sorry I’m late. Mr. Sellick’s class ran over.”
