Newspaper reporter Warren "Mitch" Mitchell and photographer Alan Jeffrey try to catch the killer of a St. Paul Winter Carnival performer during the coldest week of the year in Minnesota.
It's so cold that the flashers in downtown St. Paul, Minn., are only showing pictures of themselves when newspaper reporter Warren "Mitch" Mitchell and photographer Alan Jeffrey are called out to cover the discovery of the frozen body of a young woman. The victim is a former St. Paul Winter Carnivall performer. She was last seen leaving a bar with what appeared to be a member of the Winter Carnival's Vulcan Krewe, throwing suspicion on the entire eight-man group. When newspaper reporter Mitch Mitchell, photographer Alan Jeffrey and cartoonist Dave Jerome arrive on Martha's Vineyard for a vacation with Dave's freelance writer uncle, they discover the uncle is missing and the treasure hunter he recently wrote about has just been found dead.
The search for the uncle and the treasure hunter's killer takes the trio all around the Vineyard and finally takes Mitch on a boat ride that could be his last.

An umpire makes a couple of bad calls and the next morning he turns up dead. Photographer Al Jeffrey becomes a suspect because of his argument with ump, and reporter Warren "Mitch" Mitchell sets out to find the real killer.
