The Deaconess helped the native Americans in southwest Florida to improve their standard of living by selling their crafts. She was an amazing woman.
Deaconess Harriet Bedell was a missionary to the native Americans in Oklahoma and Alaska before she came to southern Florida in 1933. She worked with the Seminoles and sold their pathchwork clothing to all the major stores. She also taught them hygiene and helped the medicine man when they got white man's diseases. She was loved by them and by her neighbors in Everglades City.
In 2009 she was cannonized by the Episcopal Church. Her Feast Day is January 8, the anniversary of her death in 1969.

Brief biography of the amazing man who created successful streetcar advertising businesses in Memphis and New York before investing in Southwest Florida where he was the largest landowner. He built the Tamiami Trail across the Everglades, linking Tampa to Miami, so that his chain of hotels and other properties were accessible
Barron Gift Collier was born in Memphis in 1873 and left school at age 16. He soon ran his own business installing gas street lamps and then branched out to sell streetcar advertising. His agency monopolized the southern states so he moved to New York City for a larger market, placing advertising cards in the subways as well as in trams and buses. He took his civic responsibilities seriously and supported the Boy Scouts. He was appointed a Special Deputy Police Commissioner in charge of public safety in the New York streets.

MSD was a pioneer environmentalist who tried to save the Everglades and wrote the famous book "The Everglades: River of Grass".
Marjory Stoneman Douglas saw many changes during her 108 years (1890-1998), especially the growth of southern Florida and the draining of the Everglades. She wrote her famous book about the "River of Grass" in 1947 when the Everglades National Park was opened. Later she lobbied for glades restoration and founded the Friends of the Everglades.
