I have written a new book, Virusphere, which explains the role of viruses not only our health but also their key role in the origins of life and in our human evolution. It also explains where viruses such as COVID come from and why they behave as they do. It was repeatedly the no 1 book in its category on Amazon.co.uk for 2020.
My previous book, The Mysterious World of the Human Genome, explains the way our human genome works for a reader with no prior knowledge of DNA, genes or genomes. At a time when we are entering a "golden age" of genetics and genomics, this has never been more important to society. It is published in the UK and US and was the starred review on Kirkus Reviews as well as attracting fine reviews elsewhere, including the San Francisco Review. It went straight to the no 1 spot for books in its category on amazon.com, amazon.co.uk and amazon.com.au and was hailed by a distinguished reviewer as one of his top ten rated books on genetics and the human genome.
My previous non-fiction titles have included the New York Times Book of the Year, The Forgotten Plague (Tuberculosis: The Greatest Story Never Told), and the Charlie Munger Chosen Book, Darwin's Blind Spot. In another book,Virolution, I explained for a non-scientific reader, the role of retroviruses embedded in the human genome. I also explored the fascinating theme of metamorphosis in another book, The Mystery of Metamorphosis: A Scientific Detective Puzzle. I've written features in New Scientist on the subjects of Virolution and Metamorphosis. In terms of real science, I've been developing the concepts of viral symbiosis and the holobiontic nature of the human genome for many years. Recently I've released low-priced kindles of Darwin's Blind Spot, Virus X, and Tuberculosis: The Greatest Story Never Told, which are available globally.
On a lighter note, I'm also the author of a four book epic fantasy series, The Three Powers. I was thrilled to bits with Glenda A Bixler's review of the first book in this series, The Snowmelt River, for AuthorsDen, which had a positive impact on sales. I hope this will encourage other people to believe that AuthorsDen can really help them with their writing. I'm also delighted to say that The Snowmelt River entered the amazon.co.uk epic fantasy top ten bestsellers. Many thanks to the readers who made this possible. Wonderful to let folks know that book 2 of The Twins of Moon Trilogy, The Sea of Stars, is now available on kindle and the paperback should be available in June 2022. The Twins of Moon has had a fantastic reception, with large numbers of reviews on amazon and Goodreads. Fingers crossed for The Sea of Stars, which features the twins and a growing cast of strange and wonderful characters as it enters the hallowed world of pure magic.

I'm interested in many things other than writing. I'm a family man, with two children and two grandchildren. I also like sport and support my local football team, Sheffield Wednesday. I used to play the guitar but these days do more listening than playing. I ran an art gallery for nine years and like the company of artists.

Until recently, I taught the evolution of the human genome at The University of Sheffield Medical School. Indeed I believe that we are about to embark on one of the most important phases of human scientific and societal discovery - something I refer to in Mysterious World as a "golden age" of genetics and genomics. this is very exciting, but it is also somewhat daunting in the sense that we shall soon have the ability to change our wonderful human genome.
