Daniel Kiernan Callaghan resides in the Great Pacific Northwest, in the ominous shadows of volcanoes Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier. Over the years, he's come to truly appreciate Seattle's 360 days of rain, as well as its occasional earthquake. He lives in one of the city's most notorious hotels, a flophouse for loons and creeps of all descriptions. Most of his non-writing time is spent in one of several dives, or greasy spoons, where he drinks to excess and records notes of his surroundings in a Mead Composition Notebook. Callaghan is presently as work on a short story collection, Sparkle and Fade, allegedly to be produced and marketed by Brown Paper Publishing. He's also hacking his way through a novel, Details of the War, a black satire concerning alcoholism and homelessness. Though he's been writing for over thirty-five years, Callaghan has only been published once, in the local arts magazine Misc. Media. A crippling fear of rejection has prevented him from submitting work to other publishers. Eh, bien... Callaghan writes for himself anyway, and not for popular approval. The fifty-one year old Callaghan enjoys well-chilled martinis and well-cured (if roundly illegal) Cuban cigars. His favorite haunt is the Mecca Lounge on Seattle's Queen Anne Hill, where he can be found scratching his alcoholic itch while playing "Love Cats" on the jukebox over and over. He is an excellent conversationalist, and his favorite subjects are the cinema, literature, and Wagner's Ring Cycle. He also relishes the company of emerging writers, though he doesn't really have any useful advice. He is a full member of the Melange on Monday writer's circle at Seattle's ground zero for literary pursuits, the Richard Hugo House. His faithful and sole trusted companion is a cat named Delilah. The works showcased here are merely snippets dashed off on sleepless nights. Callaghan is working on a few more pieces with teeth, and will post them on this site as they are finished. As those go online, the stories and articles here will be removed. They're not truly representative of the author's storytelling style, and it's hoped that the new stories will make for more pleasurable reading.
