Where are you from?
I am originally from Freeport, New York (which is located in Long Island), however, I’ve lived in Brooklyn and Harlem, New York, Washington D.C., Durham NC and I currently live near San Francisco, CA with my husband and son.
When and why did you begin writing?
I’ve been writing since college. But I always saw my work as private; I never imagined that I would publish anything that I ever wrote.
What inspired you to write your first book?
I don’t remember what inspired me to write my first book, but having my son is what inspired me to publish. I was writing him a letter after he was born, and I told him in this letter that he should never have regrets, he should do absolutely everything he ever wanted to. I had an epiphany….why wasn’t I doing every thing I ever wanted too? I quit my job, went to law school and wrote books.
Do you have a specific writing style?
Not really, I write both non fiction and fiction, it depends on my mood. However, recently I’ve had a really strong need to help people by sharing all the information in my head….so I’ve written mainly self help books for the last 4 years.
Who has most influenced your life?
Two people. Oprah Winfrey, although we’ve never met, I would consider her a mentor. She’s multi talented, powerful, driven, down to earth, beautiful and she works from a basis of helping people. The other person, who influenced my life, is my first boyfriend. He was someone I considered a modern day renaissance man. He was an author, editor of a major magazine, publisher of a content driven website, artist and producer and director of a documentary. He taught me, in my twenties, that I should never set limitations on myself. I’ve lived my life that way ever since.
What book are you reading now?
I’m not reading any books right now, I am completely preoccupied with studying for the California Bar Exam.
What are your current projects?
I’m working on revising three books, 6 Simple Steps to Profitable Property Management, 6 Simple Steps to Real Estate Investing, No Credit Required and 6 Simple Steps to Growing a Successful Business, even during a recession. They will be published by the end of the year.
Do you see writing as a career?
Writing is one side of me. I would never limit myself to career. I’m multi-faceted —not just an author, speaker, consultant, real estate investor, executive director, business manager, soon to be attorney.
