Background Information

Effective writing isn't limited to volumes of Shakespeare or Dickens.  Great writing is found in the pages of Dr. Seuss, in TV & movie scripts and on roadside billboards.  The Lord's Prayer may be the finest 70 words ever crafted ... even if you're not a Christian. I sat down to create a “How to Write” guide with the conviction that I could help writers of fiction and nonfiction, as well as corporate communicators, journalists and pleasure-writers. I'm frustrated by the novice writer (and a legion of professional sportscasters) who can’t properly use an adverb, or fails to differentiate between “fewer than” and “less than.”  These are, at their core, simple matters to understand. In When Did I Become the Oldest Person in the Room, I argue that writing is easy.  Excellent writing, though, is really tough; it is the end product of laborious RE-writing, editing, revising, reviewing and proofing ... then more rewriting and polishing.  Writing is easy – the rest of it, however, is damn hard! I advocate breaking a few rules from time to time, but only if the writer understands the rule he's breaking.  In that way (and in so many more) writing is like life.  No, on second thought, writing is life.
