While having a long-standing interest in military history, my interest in Spanish Colonial Military History started early in my museum career as I researched the topic while developing exhibits. I discovered that often over the years errors had crept into various historians works that have been perpetuated. To see what the true facts were, I returned to the original Spanish documents, which helped me to build an understanding of the larger Spanish policy picture, the details of uniforming and supplies for the soldiers on the ground, and the complex relationship of the Spanish with the various Indian groups. The more I delved into the documents, stories of the people living in the Borderlands came to life, stories that I felt needed to be told. In my writings I tryy to honor those people who faced the hardships of this isolated country while placing it in the context of the broader picture, and paying attention to details that are commonly overlooked.
