I was brought up in Vermont in those idyllic years after World War II. But I moved to New Jersey years ago, and have lived here ever since, bemoaning this state's awful reputation.
Background
Information
I was a teacher's nightmare when I was young as I was burdened with ADHD, OCD, physical and emotional abuse, and God knows what else. Back in the 1950's learning and emotional disabilities were not diagnosed, you were a good student or a PIA. I was a PIA. On top of all this, I was a born storyteller and drove my classmates of long ago totally crazy as I made up stories about houses and their occupants.
My young life was not especially a good one, but I had friends who saw my potential and held me up when I was barely functional. I survived and began to write stories about surmounting abuse, grief, and betrayal, themes I knew firsthand. My first efforts were not the best, but I kept writing and my writing grew better and better.
I have lived in New Jersey for years and have found inspiration in its varied sea and shore landscapes and its wide range of architectural styles of homes. As I did years ago, I generally begin my stories with a old house whose style I like and go on to form a story around it. I live with a story in my head for months, then I research needed background and finally begin crafting the story that forms in my mind. Takes months but I love it!
